CLIMATE CHANGE

Deforestation in the Congo Basin, the world's largest net carbon sink, has significantly intensified as of 2026, with primary forest loss in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reaching a record 590,000 hectares in 2024.

Current projections warn that up to 27% of the basin's undisturbed rainforest could vanish by 2050 if these trends continue, threatening regional rainfall patterns essential for African agriculture. The primary drivers remain small-scale slash-and-burn farming and a heavy reliance on charcoal and fuelwood for energy, though industrial mining, logging, and escalating regional conflicts in eastern DRC increasingly fragment remote areas and provide access for further clearing.
